It emphasizes abundant plant foods and olive oil as the primary source of fat, with dairy products, fish, and poultry consumed in low to moderate amounts; red meat in low amounts; and wine in low to moderate quantities. Evidence in the literature indicates that greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower risk of frailty in older adults [14-17], better global cognitive function, and a slower decline in global cognitive function among older adults without dementia [18].
