User-Centered Design of Companion Robot Pets Involving Care Home Resident-Robot Interactions and Focus Groups With Residents, Staff, and Family: Qualitative Study

A comparison between an active Paro robot and a plush toy found that the benefits of the Paro robot were limited to only engagement [8]. Robinson et al [20] found no main effect for depression (seeing a significant decrease for only loneliness). Thodberg et al [21] compared live dog visits to Paro sessions over 6 weeks and found no improvement in depression with either approach. Moyle et al [22] also found considerable variation in responses to Paro in a large randomized controlled trial.
